Anthelmintic Herbs
These types of herbs destroy parasitic worms or in other
words Helminths.
Before I can tell you what Anthelmintic herbs are available,
we need to learn just what helminths are and what they can do.
There are several types of Helminths.
Cestodes or tapeworms:
Intestinal infection occurs when the
larvae is eaten live in raw or undercooked meat. They attach to the intestinal tract by a
sucker or sucking groove on the head.
They do not enter host tissues like the other groups of helminths
do. Because of this factor, tapeworm
infections are easier to treat, although the adult worm is capable of living
for many years and may become so long in length as to disturb gastrointestinal
motility and secretions and cause abdominal pains and nausea. Anthelmintic herbs for tapeworms are safer to
use because they are confined to the intestine.
Other types of parasites are Thread or seat worms, and they live in the
lower part of intestinal tract. Infections occur thru feet or drinking water.
Nematodes or
roundworms: Infection occurs thru
the soil or contaminated raw or undercooked food. Blood and tissue-dwelling nematodes come from
insect bites and ingestion of eggs. They
are more likely to be found in the intestinal tract clinging to the intestinal
wall often causing harm, especially in children. They also live in the blood,
lymphatics and other tissues so they are harder to treat because the herbs have
to be absorbed in the intestinal tract then into the tissues. If roundworms are
not checked, they may increase to the point that they enter the stomach, and
even travel up to the pharynx. You can see roundworms in the stools. Other worms in this category are pinworms,
hookworms, trichostongolosis and whipworms.
Trematodes or flukes:
Infection
from flukes can come thru drinking infected water, swallowing infected water
while swimming, transmission from wet hands to mouth or nose, etc., eating
infected aquatic vegetation or eating infected raw meat or raw intermediate
host (snail, shellfish, crustacieans, fish).
Flukes released from eggs excreted by infected individuals penetrate
into the first intermediate host, a freshwater snail, where they develop in a
matter of weeks into free-swimming parasites that penetrate fish or crustaceans
or attach to water plants. The cycle is completed when the cysts are ingested
by humans and other hosts. The type of infection depends upon the pattern of
migration and distribution of the mature worms.
There are several types of flukes: intestinal, liver and lung are the most
common. The Intestinal flukes start in
the duodenum, attach themselves to the mucosa and mature into adult worms over
a period of 3 months. They rarely cause symptoms other than diarrhea and abdominal
discomfort.
The liver fluke also starts in the duodenum, but then they
ascend into the biliary tree to reach the hepatic ducts where they mature into
adult worms over a period of 2 months. Eggs produced by female worms are
returned to the duodenum in the bile. Symptoms are rare, but should be investigated
if heavy infections should rise to enlarged liver, jaundice and in some cases
cancer in the bile ducts.
The lung fluke starts in the ileum and penetrate the
intestinal wall to reach the peritoneal cavity and then migrate to the lungs by
crossing the diaphragm and the pleural space. Within the lung parenchyma each
induces an intense but localized necrotic inflammatory reaction which
ultimately gives rise to a cyst or abscess cavity. The capsule surrounding the
parasite swells as the fluke matures, and after some 6-9 weeks the parasites
start producing eggs that are liberated into the bronchioles and ascend the
airways to reach the gastrointestinal tract. They can create up to 20 cysts,
each harboring one or two worms. These usually live for 6-7 years but some have
been known to survive for up to 20 years!
Light infections are not going to cause serious problems, but if large
numbers of flukes remain untreated they can cause chronic bronchitis and other
problems. They can also cause epilepsy, pulmonary symptoms similar to or even
associated with active tuberculosis.
Somatids
Somatids are extremely small organisms that live in the
blood. They regulate all basic
biological functions, such as cellular division and repair, two fundamental
mechanisms of preserving and maintaining life itself. There is a definite growth pleomorphic
(form-changing) cycle as they progress in the 16 cycles of life. The first 3 are required in all healthy
bodies. When they start morphing into
the other cycles they present disease. They
are not parasites themselves, but demonstrate the presence of parasites when in
the advanced stages. Somatids were
discovered by a French-Canadian scientist, Gaston Naessens.
Protocols and what herbs are used
The difference of the action of the worm medicine depends on
the dosage given and how soon after it is given the bowels move. IF it remains
in the intestine, then it destroys; if moves quickly then usually it
expels. Almost all anthelmintics are
strong and must be used with respect and wisdom.
They are categorized in to 4 types:
Vermifuge: cause the expulsion of worms from the body.
Vermicides: destroy worms in the body.
Taeniafuges: cause the expulsion of tapeworms from the
body.
Taeniacides: Kills tapeworms in the body.
Protocols:
Thread or seat worms: an enema is sufficient.
Roundworms: Go on a 3-day cleanse/fast drinking only one
type of juice and distilled water and take the anthelmintic morning and night,
preferably with wormwood. On the morning
of the 4th day, drink 6-8 ounces of senna tea alone to cleanse and
purge the bowel of the parasites.
Tapeworm: A little more stubborn so fasting is not
always going to work. Dr. Shook gave the
following remedy:
For 1-2 days eat foods the tapeworm dislikes, such as onions,
garlic, pickles and salted fish. This
weakens the worm and tends to loosen its grip, so that when the herbs are
taken, the tapeworm can be expelled more easily. Then for 7-10 days take either Male Fern or Pomegranate. Also use Lobelia and Senna to help bowels to
expel them more easily.
Most potent
Anthelmintics are:
Wormwood: Next to Rue, is one of the most bitter herb known-
is a vermifuge –roundworms
Male Fern: taenifuge, vermifuge- tapeworms, roundworms,
pinworms
Pomegranate: taenifuge, vermifuge-tapeworms, roundworms,
pinworms
Tansy: vermifuge(seed) worms
Pumpkin Seeds- worms-tapeworm, roundworms
Hyssop-vermifuge, worms
